You can take a train that goes to Surat Thani. The distance is 651 Kms and it takes around 10 Hrs to reach. Board a ferry from there to reach Koh Samui. It is better to buy a combined ticket for train and ferry that cost around 1539THB. You have to get down at Surat Thani railway station and then take a shuttle service to reach the Don Sak pier. Shuttle service is part of the combo. Ferries sail every hour from Don Sak to Ko Samui, crossing time 1.5 hours.

Understanding Train Classes

1 = 1st class sleepers.  S = 2nd class sleepers (air-conditioned).  s = 2nd class sleepers (non-air-con).  2 = 2nd class seats.   3 = 3rd class seats.

R = Restaurant car.  DRC = Diesel Railcar express with 2nd class air-conditioned seats, meals included.

Child Policy

Children aged 0 to 3 and less than 100cm in height travel free, children aged 4 to 11 and under 150cm travel at a reduced fare, children 12 years old and upwards (or over 150cm high) pay full fare.

Cheapest way to get from Bangkok to Koh Samui is by bus. No reservations required, just show up at the bus. It will take you directly to the ferry terminal. Be sure to buy a bus and ferry combo ticket. The buses leave from Sai Tai Mai terminal in the south of Bangkok.

The buses go to Don Sak ferry terminal in Surat Thani. From there a 1.5-hour boat takes you across to Koh Samui (the same ferry used by the train combination ticket). Buses take 10 to 12 hours for the ride from Bangkok to Surat Thani and then 2 to 4 more hours.

VIP – Air Conditioned – Non-AC Buses

They leave between 5 am and 8 pm.

The VIP and AC buses have toilets, reserved seating, and are modern and clean.

You can also take buses/Vans from Khao San Road. These buses are somewhat a mix of van and bus. You can also book from 12go.asia. Their buses are ultra-luxury and their prices are bit high. A bus plus ferry combo will cost you 2641THB.
